Advise for Users of Routers And Router Bits

Having a variety of router bits to choose from is really a good thing for a woodworker like you, and choosing the best one for a particular project makes you seem like an expert at woodworking already even if you have just been into this art about a week ago or so. Well, like any other tool, you must know how to manipulate your router bits by means of inserting and adjusting them. Also, you need to know how to properly store it and take care of it if you don’t want to buy another set of bits for your future projects.

Connecting the Bit to the Router

When inserting the router bits into the router, first you need to plug out the router from the power supply. This is very important if you don’t want to get injured while you’re just beginning your woodwork. If your router has a locking device, simply remove the bit on the router and insert a new one. If it doesn’t have any locking device to stop the shaft from turning, then manually remove the bit by holding the lower nut and turning the collet. After inserting a new router bit, hold the lower nut once more and tighten the collet nut. You need to be extra careful when tightening the collet nut – make sure it is so tight that the router bit won’t come off when the router is turned into high speed mode.

Adjusting the Router Bits

After removing the router from the power supply, put it on the router table or any flat surface, then loose the locking nut and turn the collar. After this, adjust the cutting depth of the bit by sliding the router to the edge such that the bit is past the router. To achieve your desired depth, turn the collar until the router bit has reached the right cutting depth. Then, you can use the router once again by locking the collar, tightening the locking nut and plugging the router into the electric outlet.

Using a Router Guide

To keep the distance between the woodwork’s edge and the router bits, you may use a router guide. The router guide mechanically moves from the router base and away from the base of the router. You can use the locking screws to help the router guide in place.

Storing the Router Bits

Here are some tips on how to properly care for your router bits:

1. Put the router bits on a bit storage tray with a cover. Make sure that no moisture would be able to enter the storage tray to prevent rusting.

2. Store the router bits separately within one container. Never put router bits close to one another so that even if one of them rusts, the others would still look good as new.

3. Frequently sharpen the router bits using the honing method. Remember to use flat stones to “grind” and sharpen straight bits; the cone-shaped stones are used for fluted router bits.

With all these easy tips, you can create fantastic works with the help of your router bits.
